Probiotics
The Vega “Proven” was trialled at the Addenbrokes Hospital and Sheffield Medical School.
To see what effect probiotics have on IBS, researchers at the Sheffield School of Medicine led by Doctor Elizabeth Williams took a group of 48 people diagnosed with IBS and supplemented half of them daily for 8 weeks with a new probiotic containing 25 billion live bacteria per daily dose, whilst the other half took a dummy capsule. None of the participants knew wether they were taking the probiotic or the dummy.
The following symptons were assessed every two weeks during the 8 week supplementation period and again at 10 weeks – 2 weeks after taking the probiotic .
The study looked at the amount of days with pain, the level of abdominal pain, bloating, quality of life, satisfaction with bowel habit.
The results showed that the vega probiotic significantly reduced the overall symptom severity of IBS in all subjects compared to those taking the dummy capsule.
The results have been published in the prestigious Journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
